Biography

Ivana Crljenko

was born in 1975 in Zagreb where she attended primary and secondary school, and graduated in geography from the Faculty of Science in 1999. She continued her education at the same faculty, and defended her Master's thesis in 2006 and dissertation in 2011, both with topics in cultural geography. She received the scientific title of research associate in 2013 and senior research associate in 2021.

From 1999 to 2002, she worked in several secondary schools in Zagreb. From 2002 to 2024, she was employed at the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography (LZMK), first as a research assistant, then as a lexicographer (from 2022 with the title of senior lexicographer). In 2024, she received the academic title of assistant professor at the Department of Teacher Education Studies in Gospić, where she is the holder of the following courses: Geography, Nature and Society Teaching Methodology 2, Nature and Society Teaching Methodology 3, Outdoor Education, Valorisation of Natural Heritage in Tourism, and Student Practice 1 – 4 (principal organizer of the Practice courses).

Her scientific interest is mainly focused on the research of geographical names, especially exonyms (adapted geographical names of foreign geographical objects), and different topics in cultural geography, cartography and lexicography.

She is a member of the Croatian Geographical Society, the Croatian Cartographic Society, the Joint International Cartographic Association (ICA) / International Geographical Union (IGU) Commission on Toponomy, the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) East Central and South-East Europe Division, the UNGEGN Working Group on Exonyms, and the International Council of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS) Working Group on Toponymy. She is a national expert on geographical names at the Croatian Translation Departments of the European Commission. From 2019 to 2024, she was the representative of LZMK in the Croatian Government Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names, and from 2024 she has been an associate member. In 2003 and 2004, she was a member of the State Commission for Competitions in Geography.

From 2013 to 2020, she was the leader of the LZMK professional project Dictionary of Foreign Geographical Names, in which scientists from the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics (IHJJ) collaborated. The results of the project are two printed reference books (Croatian Exonyms I: Names of countries, capitals and their inhabitants and Croatian Exonyms II: The list of current and historical exonyms) and a website (https://egzonimi.lzmk.hr/). As part of the project, she initiated and organized the 17th meeting of the Working Group on Exonyms at LZMK. She was co-leader of the LZMK professional project Croatia: Counties and Municipalities (with Tomislav Kaniški), and also the editor of the Geography of Croatia field in the Croatian encyclopaedia online. As an author and editor of textual contributions, and also as a cartographer, she collaborated on about thirty lexicographical projects at LZMK and other publishing houses.

From 2014 to 2015, she was the Croatian principal investigator of the international Slovenian-Croatian scientific project A Comparative Analysis of Croatian and Slovenian Exonyms (with Drago Kladnik, PhD), which was financed by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the Public Research Agency of the Republic of Slovenia. She was a collaborator on two scientific projects of LZMK (Croatian Bio-bibliographical Heritage, and Encyclopaedia on New Media) and the scientific project of IHJJ (Croatian Language in the European Union). She is a member of the editorial board of Studia lexicographica scientific journal. She is the editor of a professional publication and proceedings from a scientific-professional conference, which are both dedicated to geographical names. She was a member of the organizing committee of two conferences.

She has authored and co-authored about sixty scientific and professional papers in Croatian and international journals and book chapters, as well as one scientific, two professional and two editorial books. She participated in about thirty Croatian and international scientific and professional conferences. She has fully or partially translated five professional or popular science geography books from English. She held a dozen professional lectures and was a mentor to geography students on their Student Practice course at LZMK.
